Chris Martin
BIOGRAPHY
Chris Martin (b. 1954, Washington, D.C.) creates paintings that capture the energy of the present, embracing stylistic diversity and spontaneity. His work is both primal and reflective, joyful yet meditative. Experimenting with unconventional materials, installations, and scale, his career follows thematic cycles rather than a linear path. Influenced by music, spirituality, and art history, he seeks a universally accessible source of inspiration. Based in Brooklyn since the 1980s, Martin is a revered figure in the artistic community.
His work is included in the permanent collections of institutions including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; High Museum of Art, Atlanta; Museum of Contemporary Art Denver; Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, the Netherlands; and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among other museums. Paintings, a career-spanning monograph, was published by Skira in 2017. Martin lives and works in Brooklyn and the Catskills, New York.
