James Gregg Herman
ARTIST STATEMENT
The inspiration for Light Wedge was the sundial form. A sundial casts a shadow by a vertical rod or wedge called a gnomon to tell the time in a specific location. In this sculpture light itself becomes the main gnomon and the random holes allow light to create many gnomon rays of light. This is my way of making a form in which the multiplicity of time could be considered. Rather than a linear idea of time in a specific place I am thinking about personal time, biological time, ecological time as well as the social and cultural aspects.
The Sentinels I & II are symbolic protectors. Both have an oculus at the top and multiple oculi below indicating a high degree of watchfulness.
